This is what they call “Hope”?

We’ve all gotten used to the idea that certain maladies will be around for a while…like until the Second Coming.  Maladies such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis…and many more are expected to be around, in epidemic proportions, longer than we think we will be alive…and anyone who tries to tell us otherwise is looked upon with real skepticism. In fact, when anyone tries to tell us “there’s hope” for such maladies as, say, diabetes,  we are more likely to believe that the person is trying to sell us something…and usually we are right.

But, what’s even worse is the fact that the “hope” we do receive is usually something like the following:

Studies show  people at high risk for type 2 diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight. You can do it by eating healthier and getting 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. In other words: you don’t have to knock yourself out to prevent diabetes. The key is: small steps that lead to big rewards. Of course, this is good advice. No denying it. As a medical doctor, I had to dispense advice like this for years, for diabetes and other conditions. Funny, as good as it is, I NEVER saw anyone become ecstatic, do cartwheels or celebrate because they had just received such counsel. Why? BECAUSE WHAT WE REALLY WANT FROM THE MEDICAL WORLD IS A CURE!

And why not?  It just doesn’t seem fair that the only real answer to conditions like diabetes or obesity is the “hope” that we stop eating almost everything we enjoy, sweat till we drop,  “pop” prescription pills ’till we’re bloated, and think positive…forever.

A new future?

So, of course, I was skeptical too when I began to hear the claims associated with glyconutrition.  As a long time medical professional and scientist, I know that “claims” are easily made… And who ever heard of “glyconutrition” anyway?

In 1999, the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Dr. Gunter Blobel for his work in the science of Glycobiology (the biology of glyconutrition). Out of the last eight Nobel Prizes awarded in medicine, four Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made in this ONE field. Believe it or not, this field (glyconutrition) affects maladies such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease directly. Why? Because, eight sugars have been isolated for their support of the immune system and cell communication. Additionally, human life cannot be supported without them.
This information got my attention. When a single Nobel Prize is won in medicine, everyone is paying attention. When four of them are won in the SAME field, as in this case involving glyconutrition, the medical world is “on fire” with the news.

As that information made its way through the medical world, other issues made the news too. For decades the American Medical Association, the powerhouse of medical professionals, taught that nutritional supplements were not necessary for good health. But, in June 2002, the AMA admitted that nutritional supplementation was vital to good health and helpful in treating diseases.

Also, the prestigious MIT published its findings. It wrote that these “sugars” were one of ten technologies it believed would change the world in the next decade. Nutritional supplementation was again vital to the conventional medical world…and at the center of the storm was glyconutrition.

But, what really jolted me professionally was this: Until these discoveries, scientists had NO idea how the cells of your body could tell the antibodies of your body you had an infection and that they had to “get on over here” to deal with it. Until these discoveries, scientists had NO idea how the cells of your body told the rest of your body that they needed nutrition, oxygen, waste elimination, infections healed…and a thousand and one other necessary functions of every cell. Goodness! We in the scientific world hadn’t known just exactly HOW even aspirin made its way to that nasty headache of yours. We just knew it worked. So, we prescribed it.

Sugar?  Say it ain’t so, doc!

But, my attention was riveted to the news that scientists like Dr. Gunter Blobel had discovered what it was that let the cells COMMUNICATE with the other systems of the body. And would you believe it?  What he found was amazing. Sugar…SUGAR! (Glyco = Greek for “sugar”) No…not table sugar (else diabetics wouldn’t be so excited over this new-found help for their diabetes). There are over 200 sugars in nature but, eight of them are VITAL to our good health. In fact, eight of them are the glyconutrition “backbone” for helping the body prevent or heal:

“    auto-immune diseases such as diabetes, psoriasis
“    overactive immune disorders such as allergies and asthma
“    under active immune disorders such as cancer, TB, strep
“    inflammatory disorders such as colitis, ulcers, Fibromyalgia
“    other conditions such as Alzheimer’s, infertility, heart disease

Suddenly, the medical world was on fire over glyconutrition. The “anecdotal evidence” concerning glyconutrition is mounting rapidly as people are finding conditions which have long grieved them…to be a thing of the past. For so many, the expectation for the future is not a “long, long, road” fraught with impossible dieting, grueling workouts, thousands of dollars of prescriptions, and the need to dream positively. People are getting relief – from diabetes, heart disease, cancer, allergies, and many others – with glyconutrition…and without prescriptions! Oh yes. I almost forgot. If you go to your doctor and he isn’t aware of glyconutrition, don’t panic. Incidentally, doctors don’t usually find out first what works. They’re just too busy being overwhelmed with the medical conditions they face, day to day. They usually find out like everyone else…They read about it or attend some seminar. Often, the marketplace produces antidotes – or research finds the right treatment, as in this case – long before they do. But, I can tell you this. The Food and Drug Administration understands that people may not eat properly. Just quit drinking sodas with sugar and you’re bound to lose some weight, right? Maybe not. Maybe you just need a good drink of water.Article Body:

What on earth does water have to do with weight loss?  Actually, a lot more than you previously imagined.

Are you aware that some studies have shown that your brain cannot distinguish between hunger and thirst?  Sometimes when your body is telling you that you are thirsty, your brain may be hearing that you are hungry.  So what do you do?  You put food in your mouth when a glass of water might have been sufficient.  Most food has calories, most water doesn’t.  Simple equation.  ‘Nuff said on that topic.

By the way, ever wake up in the middle of the night and crave a snack?  Nine times out of ten, a glass of water will do the trick.  I know, I didn’t believe it either until I tried it.  It really works!

Tissue, muscle, cells, even blood are all comprised to a large per cent of water.  When your brain starts getting signals that water is needed…well, remember the confusion factor mentioned above?  We eat something instead of giving our body what it really craves and needs!  Your entire body works much better, by the way, when the fluid levels are kept up where they need to be.

BUT I DRINK LOTS OF LIQUID AND STILL GAIN WEIGHT!

Sure you do, but what KIND of liquid.  I won’t even talk about sodas, coffee, or tea sweetened with sugar.  I’m going to assume that you already know that sugar is not the way to go if you want to lose weight, but what about the artificially sweetened drinks?

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAN CAUSE YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT?

Some studies have shown that using artificial sweeteners can contribute to weight gain in at least two ways.

First, there is the confusion factor.  When you use artificial sweeteners, you, and your brain, become confused about the calorie content of the food you eat.  You may actually find yourself eating more in an effort to satisfy an internal urge or interpretation, and this urge may be related to the assumed “fact” that the sweet soda you just drank didn’t have that many calories, so neither does this cinnamon roll.  Actually, before artificial sweeteners, our bodies and brains were pretty good at relating calorie content to food based on the sweetness.

A WORD FOR PARENTS!

Our bodies’ understanding of “sweetness” and the development of the internal calorie estimating apparatus mentioned above apparently occurs in childhood.  Early use of artificial sweeteners could cause the grown-up years later to ingest more of sweet foods than they should.

The second way in which artificial sweeteners may contribute to weight gain is what could be called…

THE SUGAR TRAP!

Your body is a complicated device which has developed a huge number of inter-related, synergistic, stimulus sensing and automatic response mechanisms.  It has learned to begin things happening inside when something sweet is detected.  The digestive system is prepared to receive a certain type of fuel…which it welcomes!  When you ingest food or drink which has been artificially sweetened, all your little hormones, glands, cells, and systems begin asking, “What’s going on?”  Like prisoners in an old movie, they start rattling their tin cups and yelling out, “FEED ME!”  Oh yeah, that was the plant in “Little Shop Of Horrors”, wasn’t it?

Anyway, your internal messengers are now not very happy, nor will they be until you send down some calories for them to munch on.  See the trap?  It reminds me of when I managed a restaurant when people would order a salad and diet drink and then smother the salad in high-calorie, high-fat dressing and have ice cream for dessert.  Get the picture.

WAIT!  IT MIGHT EVEN BE WORSE!

Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter than ordinary sugar, and that’s why you can sweeten a cup of coffee with one little white pill.  However, there are some studies which indicate that artificial sweeteners become somewhat addictive.  If that isn’t bad enough, this brings us to one of the most popular drugs in America…

CAFFEINE

Even though a lot of people who want to lose weight are drinking artificially sweetened drinks, a lot of these drinks – coffee, tea, sodas – contain caffeine.  Caffeine is a diuretic.  It dehydrates you, causing your body to lose water.  Remember, water = good.  When you are dehydrated, low on internal liquid, your metabolism slows down.  This means your body gets by on fewer calories and stores the rest as fat.  Think it through:  You get dehydrated, you get thirsty.  You just drank a cup of tea, coffee, or soda, so you can’t be thirsty, can you?  Since your brain can’t really tell the difference between hunger and thirst signals, it tells you to eat something when all that’s really going on is that you need a drink of water.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1.  Substitute water for most of the other stuff you’re drinking.

2.  “Buy” your artificially sweetened drinks.  My wife came up with this idea, but I have seen it used in other contexts as well.  If you drink an artificially sweetened drink and/or one with caffeine, buy it back with at least an equivalent sized drink of water.  Eight ounces of coffee?  Follow it with eight ounces of water.

3.  Is water boring for you?  Then try flavoring your water with lemon or something else.  Use herbal teas that have their own flavor and might not even need to be sweetened.

4.  Include soups and juices in your diet.  These are high liquid content.  Just be aware that while nutritionally better for you than diet drinks or drinks with caffeine, they DO contain calories.

5.  Can’t do without sweetened drinks?  Try stevia.  This is a natural food additive available online and at most health food stores.  While it has a sweetening effect, the FDA does not allow it to be called or marketed as a sweetener.  Due to its chemical makeup, it does not seem to produce the cravings for more food as do other non-sugar sweeteners.  I read that in a book, but I tried Stevia and that’s how it worked for me.  I was drinking four to eight cups of coffee sweetened with artificial sweeteners a day, and munching tons of snacks as I drank the coffee!  I started using stevia, and the desire for constant snacking went away.  I will warn you, while technically VERY sweet, it does have an acquired taste.  I figure if I could get used to it, anybody could.  It’s the only sweetener in our house now.

If you are a gym rat or bodybuilder or simply interested in beginning an exercise program you have probably heard a lot about creatine and the muscle miracles it performs. The best thing to do is begin taking creatine and working out with weights on a regular routine or even with a trainer. However, keep in mind you have to put in all the hard work and that all creatine does for you is helps your muscles retain water in order to be in a state where building muscle is easier. Over time you will see your muscles growing and should not see any loss of definition because of the retained water in your muscles. Truth: Research has proved that those who follow a vegetarian diet plan eat less fat and fewer calories than those who are non vegetarians. Vegetarians also tend to have lower body weights because choosing a vegetarian diet plan with low fat content is helpful in weight loss. However vegetarians can make poor food choices that contain high amounts of fat and calories with little or no nutritional value.

Myth: All dairy products are unhealthy.

Truth: Dairy products contain many nutrients your body needs including protein to build muscles and help organs work properly. Dairy products also contain calcium to strengthen your bones, and fortified with vitamin D to help your body utilize the calcium. Fortunately low-fat and fat-free milk, yougurt, and cheese are just as nutritious as whole milk products.

Myth: Eating after 8:00pm is a sure way of weight gain.

Truth: Your weight loss or gain is determined by what and how much you eat and how much physical activity you do during the day. It really doesn’t matter what time of the day you eat, your body will store any extra calories as fat. If you down 500 calories over your daily value right before you goto bed obviously your not going to burn them while you are sleeping so your body will store it as fat.

Myth: Skipping meals is a great way to save calories and lose weight.

Truth: Many studies have shown that those who skip meals (especially breakfast) and eat fewer times during the day tend to be heavier than those who eat a healthy breakfast and eat five small meals a day. Eating many small meals throughout the day helps you control your appetite and keeps your metabolism going. Those who skip meals tend to feel hungrier later on and end of over eating.

Myth: Fat-free means no calories.

Truth: Fat-free foods are often lower in calories than the same size portion of the full- fat food. Many processed fat-free foods contain just as many, if not more calories as the full fat version of the same food. Fat-free processed foods can contain added sugar, flour, or starch thickeners to improve flavor and texture after fat is removed.

Myth: Herbal weight-loss products are safe and effective.

Truth: Weight-loss products that claim to be herbal are not necessarily safe. Herbal products are not usually scientifically tested to prove they are safe or effective. A great example of this type of unhealthy herbal product is ephedra. Ephedra is an herb that is now banned by the United States Government because its products have been known to cause serious health problems and even death. Products that claim to be ephedra-free are not danger-free because they contain harmful ingredients similar to ephedra.

Myth: Weight training isn’t a good idea if you are trying to lose weight.

Truth: Weight training or doing strengthening activities such as push-ups and stomach crunches on a regular basis will actually help you lose or maintain weight. Activities that build muscle are great because muscle burns more calories than body fat. Its recommended to do strengthening activities two or three times a week. Only intense strength training can build very large muscles.”

Use these steps to put in your weight loss program on turbo!Article Body:
1. Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast.

2. Eliminate wheat- and flour-based products for the time being. And yes, that definitely includes bread and pasta.

3. Eat unprocessed foods. Ninety percent of what you eat should be a combination of (in this order of importance) raw vegetables, steamed vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and maybe a few fruits if necessary.

4. Reduce starch to one portion a day, and don’t eat that portion during your evening meal. Best choices are beans, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal.

5. Don’t overdo fruit: one a day maximum, and only the low-sugar, high-fiber variety. Apples, pears, plums and berries all are good choices. For now, fruit should be eaten alone or with something light, like low fat nuts. Lose the fruit juice completely.

6. Reduce or eliminate dairy for the time being, especially cow’s milk. Exceptions: reasonable amounts of low sugar, fat free yogurt.

7. Lose the booze. Despite what the “studies” say, you lose no health benefits by giving up alcohol (including wine). There is nothing essential in alcohol that you can’t get in fruits and vegetables without all the bad side effects that go along with it.

8. Stop using vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower and corn. The supermarket kind is highly refined, and it oxidizes easily when heated, contributing to arterial plaque. Use olive oil instead, and apply it to food after the food is cooked when possible.

9. Watch which types of fat you’re eating. The amount of fat you eat is probably less important than the kind of fat you eat. The worst are fried foods, margarine and foods that contain hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oils. The best is omega-3, found in fish and flaxseed oil.

10. Obsessively drink water: At least 8 ounces for every 20 pounds of bodyweight you’re now carrying around, each day. Every day. No excuses.
